I'm torn on this, because I think software piracy serves a need in that it offers people software to try and sample before committing to purchase. Thing is, over time SOME software (like Logic) has gotten less expensive. I guess it's a double standard. If you're a 15 year old kid I don't think there's much of a moral compromise in grabbing software off BitTorrent.
As soon as you start making money with it then there are issues. But from that standpoint I guess I can grab Logic off BitTorrent because I haven't made any money with it either Actually, maybe I did about 2 years ago. I don't think the whole 'cracked software' issue washes on the Mac now. You get Garageband for free, when I've been stuck without my XSkey somewhere its saved my life. There are several signed artists who have come out of the closet, and admitted they've used it to produce released material!
So just use that till you can afford a Professional solution that gives the features and support required. In fact, Garageband imposes a few limitations that force you to concentrate on other parts of the process, almost like an electronic 'Oblique Strategy'. With image editing there really hasn't been much other than Photoshop, especially for beginning users. Years ago when my buddies wanted to edit images they would use an unlicensed copy of Photoshop, even though Photoshop would be complete overkill for what they wanted to do. Adobe never did a good job of getting the word out on Photoshop Elements, so as far as these people knew it was Photoshop or nothing. Now on the Mac there are a ton of low cost Photoshop alternatives. My favorite one so far (even though it isn't released yet) is.
It uses OSX native APIs like Core Image, fits in with Automator, does most of what you need Photoshop for, and will sell for $59. Photoshop CS3 is about $650. That kind of software just didn't exist even 5 years ago. Photoshop was one of these things that people dealt with because they thought they needed it, but frustrations stemming from that kind of software helped develop this market of alternatives. Even Apple is blowing away Mac Office with iWork.

Looks like thats it. Using serials posted on the web, somebody has installed the application without an XSkey or their own legit copy. Logic is now unlocked. I am stunned at this news. I just read in another thread that LStudio had no dongle and I thought to myself 'Wow, Apple has decided to give Logic Pro for free.' This is Apple's decision!! This must surely be RIP any debates about whether hacked software is ultimately good for the company.
Apple has decided that it is and I heartily agree. It is really a new world these days and changes are happening so fast I struggle to keep up with it all.
