Synology wins server setup

Hi, just got and DS-209, was able to set it up with different users, able to see it from any computer on my home network. Also was able to map network drives to different volumes.

FTP works as well. Would really appreciate some help with WINS server. Tried reading up on it but having hard time grasping a concept. What is the main purpose?

Synology Win 10 Network Share

What IP address do I enter for WINS server under setup menu? Supposedly it allows users to access resources by computer name instead of by IP address, but I already have drive letter assign to different users volumes? To sum it up: confused and in need of some help. Hi, I'm no expert here, so hopefully someone more knowledgeable will reply - but, I was setting up my new DS209 on Friday and I ran into the same problems. I didn't know what to enter, so I tried the IP addresses of our two servers. Long story short - it seems to work fine now with the WINS setting left blank.

I even went so far as to install and start the WINS service on one of the servers, but that doesn't appear to be necessary. I was struggling with getting the diskstation to consistently connect with my domain, but the WINS setting was not the problem. Hope this helps.

Windows 10 connect to synology

I have setup a WINS server on my network and my Diskstation is registering the IP address of it's second LAN connection with the WINS server. LAN 2 ip is 169.254.57.43 and it's currently unplugged. I added the WINS server and corrected the netmask (because I changed it recently and didn't update the DS). After the WINS change the the DS said it was restarting the network service.

At that point the DS sent it's IP to the WINS server but it was the wrong one. This appears to be a bug in how the DS is registering itself with WINS. I found an old thread which said to 'use the latest Synology Assistant to reset the network configuration', but I don't understand how to do this. Can someone assist me?
