I haven't played around with my Alpha too much yet but I'm assuming they included a backup utility or did you have to go and get it from the dell website? I'm probably going to give restoring a shot soon, my plan with this machine was to switch out the stock hdd for a ssd as soon as I got it and restore everything to the new drive.

Hopefully Windows doesn't see the hdd change as a new machine and invalidates its own license; at least that's what used to happen to me on my old Win7 machine. I assume the image that was created will work just fine, and as a backup I was able to get a bare Windows install disk from Dell.
Apparently the Alienware interface can be separately downloaded so worse case I do have a way of recovering. If you are swapping drives then I can't see the harm in at least trying the restore disk which can be created from the included software. If it doesn't work then you still have the original HD to fall back on which you could image and restore. Check back in this thread if you do try the restore image, I'm curious how well it works. I might replace the HD someday as well, the 5400RPM drive in the thing is really the only bottleneck. An SSD would really open the thing up, I just can't justify spending even more money on it at this point though. Probably not till the weekend though; I need to backup the machine that this guy's replacing since it's going to be donating the ssd.
EDIT: weekend, sh-meekend. So just finished switching out the hdd to an ssd and upgrading the ram. Easy as pie and the restore stick worked fine in getting the machine back to factory on the ssd. The only gotcha I came across was at the beginning. Alien respawn wouldn't recognize any of my USB keys at all even though windows saw the drives just fine.

Audi tt vin number decoder. Tried every port and three different drives and nothing. Turns out that if you click on the button next to the prompt telling you that it can't find any usb removable drives (even though the button looks like it's greyed out) it'll let you pick a drive from an explorer window. This is all from within respawn btw.
Otherwise it went fine. EDIT2 - I should add that the whole thing took a little over an hour from making the usb to getting back to a desktop on the ssd. My usb stick was a 2.0, would have gone faster with a usb 3.0 stick.
